In a city known across the nation for its loud nightlife and endless entertainment, emerged a championship basketball team at UNLV known for its relentless winning style while surrounded by NCAA controversy towards the end of our last century. Part of HBO Sports Documentaries, 'Runnin' Rebels of UNLV' captures the historic college basketball team that produced star athletes and countless memories of NCAA wins from the controversial end of the 1970's through to the glory days of the early 1990's. Former Long Beach State head coach, Jerry Tarkanian, joined the UNLV Rebels in 1973, leading the team to its 20-6 season record and later four appearances in the 'Final Four,' including one NCAA championship in 1990.
The impressive winning streak under Coach Tarkanian with a 509-105 record while at UNLV, did not stop the NCAA from going after Tarkanian for recruiting violations and one of his players who battled a drug related arrest resulting in an attempted coach suspension and forced playoff probation respectfully. Making interview appearances in the HBO Sports Documentary, include Coach Jerry Tarkanian himself, former UNLV players Stacey Augmon, Reggie Theus and Greg Anthony. DISH Network will air the 'Runnin' Rebels of UNLV' on Saturday, March 12 at 9:30 PM ET/PT, just before the official start of March Madness on Tuesday, March 15.
