Attention all you hockey fans out there, The Rangers and The Flyers Rivalry come to a head tonight on HBO at 10pm. ‘The Rangers-Flyers Rivalry: Two Storied Franchises Prepare to Battle in the NHL Winter Classic’ premiering tonight on HBO tells the story of two teams that are separated by less-than-100 miles down the stretch of the New Jersey Turnpike, the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers share more in common than fans of either team would like to admit. Some of the similarities include them both being storied franchises that are at crossroads. One is an original six member of the league, the other a franchise that undeniably changed the game. Their paths have collided many time, but their individual styles continue to shine through, but one thing remains, they both have some of the most devoted-often times rabid- fans in the country. There is one thing that separates them, the distinct route each is taking in order to achieve the goal of every NHL franchise, winning the Stanley Cup! For the past two years the Flyers have been favorited to win, but were unfortunately sent home early by the eventual champion the Boston Bruins, both years. This past offseason they did some rearranging, trading away their two most recognizable players for a younger, less-proven cast. Most of the Rangers team is still pretty much the same, except for one major exception, they hauled in star Brad Richards, whose arrival evokes images of the impact Mark Messier had on the Blue shirts in the early 1990s. While this documentary chronicles the past years and the rivalry between the two, the teams will not actually meet until January 2nd in Philadelphia’s Citizen Bank Park for the 2012 Winter Classic, one of the NHL’s premier showcase events. Players from both teams cannot wait for the opportunity to play each other; many of them grew up playing hockey outside whirling around on frozen ponds in December and January.
